River Towy (Afon Tywi) – wild brown trout

The Towy is a world-renowned sea trout fishery but also offers excellent brown trout fishing. Some of the best fishing can be found on Llandeilo Angling Association waters – which I have fished for over 30-years.
The Towy is one of the longest rivers flowing entirely within Wales, being over 75-miles long. During drought conditions, water is released from Llyn Brianne Dam so the Towy is still ‘fishable’ when other rivers struggle with high water temperatures.
Trout fishing is good all year round, with some excellent fly hatches, including march browns, large dark olives and grannom sedges. Many locals focus on sea trout, either at night or during high water conditions, so much of the waters are lightly fished during the daytime.
I regularly target the trout on the Towy, carrying both dry fly and nymph setups, catching specimens to 3-pounds. Of course, there is also a chance of a sea trout or salmon throughout the season, particularly using modern nymphing techniques or fishing a falling flood.
Llandeilo waters are available via the WUF Passport booking system.
Season: 1st April to 30th September.
